The final concentrated air assault fails

Axis air forces mounted another concentrated attack on Malta from 11 to 19 October. Around 2,400 sorties were flown as bombers and fighters again concentrated on the airfields, but the defence now had more Spitfires, improved warning and interception procedures, and a ground organisation hardened by the spring battles. RAF Museum accounting gives forty-six Luftwaffe aircraft lost against thirty RAF Spitfires during the period. Aachen and the Hürtgen Forest

The city assault begins

The 26th Infantry entered Aachen from the east. Infantry, Shermans, M10 tank destroyers and M12 155 mm gun motor carriages worked as small teams against cellars, factories and masonry strongpoints. Heavy direct fire opened walls and suppressed buildings before riflemen crossed streets or moved through adjoining structures. Fighting advanced block by block through a broken urban front.
