Pearl Harbor was a carrier-air operation built around surprise, range and simultaneous suppression of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and Oʻahu's air power. Six Japanese carriers approached undetected from the north, launched two waves on 7 December and shattered the battleship line in less than two hours. The attack also left the American carriers at sea, the submarine base, repair facilities and most fuel storage intact. Its tactical success therefore opened a war that the strike itself could not settle.

The Operational Geography

A carrier force north of Oʻahu, a narrow approach corridor and seven airfields around the fleet anchorage

The attack depended on geography at two scales. Nagumo's carriers remained far enough north of Hawaiʻi to avoid ordinary patrol patterns while staying within the combat radius of their aircraft. The first wave then approached Oʻahu from the north, crossed the North Shore and split across a compact target area that could be reached within minutes.

The harbor and the airfields formed one target system. Wheeler held much of the Army pursuit force; Hickam was the principal Army bomber base; Kaneohe and Ford Island supported naval patrol aircraft; Ewa held Marine aviation; Bellows and Haleiwa provided additional fighter fields. Destroying aircraft on the ground reduced the chance that the carrier force would be located and attacked while its strike groups were returning.

The map uses hourly reconstructed positions from 06:00 through 12:00. At 07:00 the first wave is placed from the Opana radar range. At 08:00 it is split over its target axes while the second wave remains inbound. At 09:00 the first wave is outbound and the second is over Oʻahu. The 10:00, 11:00 and 12:00 snapshots move both waves back toward Kido Butai. These are operational centroids and route reconstructions, not individual-aircraft tracks.

Command & Decision

Yamamoto's strategic gamble, Nagumo's execution and an American warning system that never became a tactical alert

Yamamoto's concept was to disable the Pacific Fleet at the opening of a wider offensive, buying time for Japan to seize a defensive perimeter across Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Genda and the carrier-air staffs turned that aim into a tightly rehearsed strike plan built around shallow-water torpedoes, heavy armour-piercing bombs, fighter suppression of the airfields and two closely timed waves.

On the American side, warning existed in fragments. Strategic messages indicated that war was imminent; Ward fought a submarine before the air raid; Opana radar detected the first wave more than fifty minutes before the attack. None of those warnings became a coherent tactical picture in time. Aircraft had been concentrated partly to guard against sabotage, radar identification was embryonic and the fleet was not at general air-alert stations.

Nagumo's withdrawal remains one of the most argued decisions of the operation. No third strike was launched or rearmed. The surviving fuel farms, submarine base and repair facilities became important American assets, but a claim that a third wave would certainly have destroyed them and transformed the Pacific war goes beyond the evidence. Nagumo also had to recover two waves, account for losses and consider American carriers whose positions were unknown.

Welch drove to Haleiwa with Kenneth Taylor, took off in a P-40 and fought through repeated engagements during the raid. He was credited with four Japanese aircraft. His experience represents the small number of American pursuit pilots who managed to reach the air.

Taylor flew from Haleiwa alongside Welch, engaged Japanese aircraft over Oʻahu and returned to the fight after landing to rearm. He was credited with two victories. Their sorties showed that the pursuit force was not completely destroyed, but it could not be assembled in time to stop the first wave.

Miller helped move the mortally wounded Captain Mervyn Bennion and then manned an anti-aircraft machine gun despite having no formal training on the weapon. He continued assisting casualties as West Virginia burned and flooded and later received the Navy Cross.

Yamamoto pressed for a carrier strike on the U.S. Pacific Fleet if war with the United States became unavoidable. He was not aboard Nagumo's task force; his role was strategic conception and approval within the Combined Fleet. The operation sought a short-term naval advantage for Japan's simultaneous offensives across Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

Nagumo commanded the six-carrier force that crossed the North Pacific and launched the two strikes. After recovering the aircraft he followed the operational logic of the mission and withdrew rather than prepare a third attack, with the location of the American carriers still unknown.

Fuchida led the first wave from the carrier force to Oʻahu and coordinated the attack signal over the island. He transmitted the 'Tora, tora, tora' message indicating tactical surprise and remained over the target area long enough to observe the main strikes against the harbor.

Six carriers, three specialised attack aircraft, modified torpedoes, American pursuit aircraft, patrol planes and early warning radar

The carrier air groups were specialised by attack profile. B5N aircraft approached at wave-top height with torpedoes or bombed from altitude with heavy converted naval projectiles. D3A dive bombers attacked airfields and ships from steep angles. A6M fighters suppressed aircraft and anti-aircraft positions while protecting the strike formations.

The Type 91 torpedo was the key adaptation to Pearl Harbor itself. Wooden stabilising fins and extensive low-level training reduced the weapon's tendency to dive too deeply after release. This turned the harbor's shallow water from a presumed defensive advantage into a solvable engineering problem.

American equipment did not simply fail. The SCR-270 at Opana detected the incoming formation at long range, P-40 and P-36 fighters that could be dispersed reached combat, and anti-aircraft fire became intense during the second wave. The larger failure was timing: much of that capability entered the fight after surprise had already allowed the first wave to strike concentrated aircraft and ships.

Akagi, Kaga, Sōryū, Hiryū, Shōkaku and Zuikaku concentrated Japan's most experienced naval aviators in a single striking force. The six-carrier concentration gave Nagumo enough aircraft for two large waves while retaining fighters for combat air patrol.

Zeros provided air cover and strafed the airfields to keep American fighters on the ground. Their range allowed them to accompany both strike waves from carriers operating hundreds of miles from Oʻahu.

The B5N was the principal anti-ship weapon of the first wave. Forty carried Type 91 torpedoes against ships in the harbor while others carried converted heavy armour-piercing bombs for high-level attacks on battleship decks.

D3A dive bombers attacked airfields, ships and naval-yard targets in both waves. Their steep attacks complemented the low torpedo approach and high-level B5N bombing, forcing defenders to respond to several attack profiles at once.

Pearl Harbor was shallow enough that conventional aerial torpedoes risked diving into the bottom. Japanese modifications and intensive training allowed the Type 91 to enter at a shallower angle and run successfully across the harbor.

PBYs were among the aircraft most important for finding an enemy carrier force at sea, which made their destruction operationally valuable to the attackers. Many were caught on the ground or water at Kaneohe and Ford Island.

P-40s at Wheeler, Bellows and Haleiwa were the Army's principal modern fighters on Oʻahu. Most were caught before they could take off, but a small number reached the air and engaged the Japanese waves.

The Opana SCR-270 detected the first wave more than fifty minutes before the attack. The equipment worked; the failure was in identification, staffing and command procedure. The radar return was reported but interpreted as the expected mainland B-17 flight.

Arizona was struck by several bombs; the catastrophic hit near the forward magazines destroyed the ship's bow and killed most of the crew lost aboard her. The wreck was left in place and later became the central memorial site at Pearl Harbor.

Type A midget submarine

Five Type A midget submarines were launched from larger submarines to penetrate the harbor or attack ships attempting to leave. They added complexity but little combat effect: all five were lost, and the surviving evidence does not support crediting them with decisive damage inside the harbor.

The Cost

A devastating tactical result, followed by salvage and a strategic outcome larger than the harbor

The American toll was 2,403 dead and 1,178 wounded. Twenty-one ships were sunk or damaged and 188 aircraft were destroyed. Arizona accounted for 1,177 deaths; Oklahoma lost more than 400. Japanese losses were 29 aircraft and fewer than 100 personnel, while all five midget submarines committed to the operation were lost.

The physical destruction did not equal the permanent loss of the Pacific Fleet. Pearl Harbor's shallow water allowed extensive salvage. Most damaged ships eventually returned to service, although Arizona, Oklahoma and Utah did not return to combat. The aircraft carriers were absent and therefore survived the raid.

The strategic result cannot be measured only in ships. Repair yards, fuel storage and the submarine base remained usable, while the attack ended the political argument over whether the United States would enter the war against Japan. Pearl Harbor gave Japan immediate freedom of action in the western Pacific, but it also committed the United States to a long war in which those surviving assets mattered.

Where official accounts differ slightly on aircraft totals or exact minute marks, the page uses approximate wording rather than pretending the records are perfectly uniform.

The map's aircraft positions are reconstructions from known operational points: the carrier launch area north of Oʻahu, the Opana radar ranges, the 07:40 North Shore crossing, the target split, the first-wave withdrawal, the second-wave arrival and the return to Kido Butai. Airfield coordinates identify where American aircraft were positioned; they do not attempt to locate every individual airframe on its parking apron.

Photographs are taken from individual Wikimedia Commons records whose archival source and reuse status can be checked. Exact-day images are used on the event rail only when they depict the event or its direct physical result on 6–7 December 1941.

After recovering the attack groups, Nagumo withdrew. The carriers did not rearm for a third strike. Their orders had emphasised surprise, the whereabouts of the American carriers were unknown, and Nagumo judged the principal mission complete.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed a joint session of Congress and asked for a declaration of war against Japan. The Senate approved the resolution unanimously; the House passed it with Jeannette Rankin casting the sole dissenting vote.
