Chiang Kai-shek
Keeping Nationalist China in the war from Chongqing
After Nanking and Wuhan fell, Chiang continued the war from Chongqing and retained command of the Nationalist armies. He had to balance resistance to Japan against the preservation of his forces, relations with the Chinese Communists and dependence on foreign aid. American pressure for stronger central control of Chinese forces repeatedly brought him into conflict with Joseph Stilwell, whose recall Chiang secured in October 1944.
