Official food allocations were far below subsistence. Between 1940 and mid-1942, about 83,000 Jews died from starvation and disease despite extensive smuggling and self-help efforts.

A large air and artillery preparation opened the First and Ninth Army offensive toward the Roer. The 4th Infantry Division attacked through the northern Hürtgen while the main VII Corps effort operated farther north. Bombing achieved greater effect in open areas; forest canopy, cloud and broken visibility shielded many German positions from air observation and made close support difficult.
