German forces in the Netherlands capitulate and normal supply can resume

German forces in the Netherlands capitulated on 5 May. Emergency air drops and negotiated ground deliveries had already begun, but the end of occupation removed the military barrier to restoring conventional food distribution. Recovery was not immediate. The Hunger Winter had left tens of thousands dead, many more weakened by undernutrition and a population dependent on rationing and outside supply while transport networks were repaired.
