The German west-bank bridgehead collapses

By 10 March the remaining German bridgehead around Wesel and Xanten had collapsed and the surviving forces withdrew across the Rhine, destroying crossings behind them. First Canadian Army's campaign from 8 February to 10 March had cost 15,634 casualties and taken 22,239 German prisoners; Ninth Army had inflicted and captured additional losses in its advance from the Roer. The Allies now held the west bank through the Rhineland while the Remagen bridgehead was already established on the eastern bank.
