The outer ring of Cherbourg reached
VII Corps closed up to the landward fortifications of Cherbourg, a belt of forts, ditches and pillboxes built to face inland. A formal demand for surrender was broadcast and refused. Inside the perimeter, German engineers had already begun the systematic destruction of the port they had been ordered to deny to the Allies.
