Operation Cobra

Through the hole

The armoured columns took Marigny and Saint-Gilles and pushed south into country where, for the first time in Normandy, there was nothing continuous in front of them. Tanks fitted with hedgerow cutters went through banks instead of over them. Fighter-bombers worked ahead of the columns in direct support, and German movement in daylight became close to impossible.
