Canadian infantry seize the heights at Assoro
During the night of 20–21 July, the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment climbed difficult ground toward Assoro using tracks and ravines away from the main road. The leading Canadians reached the height and came under German counterattack. Artillery support helped the regiment hold its exposed position until other Canadian units opened routes for supplies and reinforcement. By 22 July the village and surrounding ground were in Canadian hands.
