Blizzard, then thaw

A blizzard on 27 and 28 January blocked roads with deep snow across central Europe. At the turn of the month temperatures rose rapidly. Melting snow softened the roads and increased the distance between the Soviet spearheads, their railheads and their bridging equipment.
