Blockbuster and the Hochwald gap

The Canadians attacked the last prepared position, a gap about a mile wide between two woods, held by parachute troops with anti-tank guns and covered by artillery from beyond the Rhine. It took nine days and was, by the reckoning of the units involved, the hardest fighting the First Canadian Army did in the entire war. Two Victoria Crosses were awarded in the sector.
