Operation Halyard

Two C-47s land through a break in the cloud for the final lift

Colonel Kraigher and First Lieutenant John L. Dunn left Italy at 11:00 in two C-47s escorted by sixteen P-38s. They reached Bunar at 12:55. A hole in the cloud revealed a 1,700-foot strip frozen just firmly enough to support the transports. The aircraft loaded twenty American airmen, one U.S. citizen, two Yugoslav officers, four French army personnel, four Italians and the two remaining Halyard team members. They took off at 13:15. Leary closes the operation with 417 personnel flown out between 9 August and 27 December, including 343 American airmen.
